The borders of Iran and Georgia are only 100 miles away, yet their people and religion are strikingly different: Instead of dark-haired hijab-wearing Western-Asian-looking Persians, there are now blonde-haired Georgians who resemble Eastern European facial features. Instead of Shia Muslim mosques in Iran, there are Orthodox Christian cathedrals in Georgia. Georgia is also where Joseph Stalin was born.

東正教與天主教 The Schism in 1054 was the break of communion between what are now the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox churches. Catholics believe that the Pope has supreme authority over the entire church, whereas Orthodox believers believe that all bishops have the same authority that only differs in honor due to different bishoprics. The icons in an Orthodox church is quite different from the ones in a Catholic church.

Born in the city of Gori in Georgia (then Russian Empire), Joseph Stalin was widely considered as one of 20th century’s most significant figures. Stalin was the Communist Party leader of the Soviet Union in the 1920s-1950s. He formalized the Leninist interpretation of Marxism, and created his own policies known as Stalinism. While being considered a victorious wartime leader in Russia and Georgia, his totalitarian government has been widely condemned for ethnic cleansing, executions, and famines that caused the deaths of millions.

斯大林 毛澤東 Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong. Both adapted Marxism-Leninism to their own models and created their own interpretations and practical applications of the socialist ideology: USSR / Stalin’s “Five-Year Plan” vs. PRC / Mao’s “Great Leap Forward”. Both Stalin and Mao considered themselves as the global leader of the Communist movement.

麵包車 One can easily get around Tbilisi by taking local buses and metro. But if you want to go outside the city, you can take the “marshrutka”: Marshrutka is basically minivan, usually in the form of an 8-seat Honda Odyssey or an 18-seat Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Marshrutkas do not have a set schedule – You get on one and it departs when it is full.

聖尼諾 The figure on the left is Saint Nino, a woman who preached Christianity in Georgia and led to the Christianization of the country. One of the unverified stories is that when Saint Nino began preaching Christianity, she had her Bible but forgot to bring a cross. So she used her own hair to make one – That is why the cross appears to be drippy; also all the figures in this cathedral look like Nicholas Cage.
