Got caught up in a demonstration in Barcelona last night that I had no intent to be involved in.
Catalonia is an autonomous region in northeastern Spain. Yesterday the Spanish Supreme Court ruled nine pro-independence leaders guilty of sedition and handed lengthy prison terms of 9-13 years. Thousands of pro-separatist protestors, of which majority were young people, were quick to respond and occupied all the roads entering Barcelona airport. Over a hundred flights were cancelled, including mine. Airport shuttles were unable to operate due to roads flooded with protestors. At around midnight, I had no choice but to walk 4km from one terminal to the other to catch my new flight. All in a sudden, I found myself in the middle of a demonstration that I had nothing to do with: A stand-off between angry protestors and riot police.
