Glacier Perito Moreno, located in the southern tip of Argentina in the Patagonia region, across the Southern Ocean from Antarctica. The Southern Patagonian Ice Field is the 3rd-largest ice field in our planet, after Antarctica and Greenland.
Glacier Perito Moreno is larger than the entire Buenos Aires city, and it keeps our planet cool by reflecting back 40-80% of the sunlight. The glacier is 30km long, 5km wide, 700m thick, and 40-70m high. Gigantic ice chunks constantly crack off the face, known as “calving”, sending huge waves across the lake and producing overwhelming sound – Definitely fascinating to see the remains of past Ice Ages up close and personal.

Cerro Terre and Fitz Roy, mountains in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, near El Chalten village. I was in the village and wanted to see if I could see both mountains on the same day – Ended up doing a solid 8-hour hike wearing sandals.

By far the largest walking tour group I have ever participated (50 people). The 4-hour walking tour was led by this young Argentine lady Loli, born and raised in Buenos Aires, who has a very good grasp of history, politics, and economics at her young age. Most Argentines have Italian and Spanish ancestry.

Argentina is a “long” country with climate ranges from sub-tropical in the north and sub-polar in the south, and its capital Buenos Aires is the 13th richest city in the world. However, Argentina has suffered from hyper-Inflation for decades: For 15 years between 1975-1990, the annual inflation averaged a whopping 300%, meaning the price level doubled every few months. Inflation has gone down since then but is still high (40% in 2016 and 30% in 2017, compared to around 2% in the US); $1 USD currently exchanges for $20 Argentine Pesos, while ten years ago $1 USD only exchanged for $3 Argentine Peso. But don’t let this seemingly favorable exchange rate fool you: Holding the US Dollars did not give me six times the purchasing power.

Evita (Eva Maria Peron) is an Argentine film actress and the First Lady. She is best known in the musical “Evita” (played by Madonna) in 1976. Her husband is the hugely popular President Juan Peron, who improved wages and achieved nearly 100% employment. Evita herself also played a major role in improving conditions for the poor and for women. She died from cancer at age 33 and was buried in La Recoleta Cemetery.

The cemetery also contains the graves of many notable people, including presidents of Argentina, Nobel Prize winners, the founder of the Argentine Navy, and a granddaughter of Napoleon.
