Guatemala
It was late afternoon and I was trying to grab a quick bite. I was in Downtown San Mateo and decided to walk into this place that I had driven by a million times before but had never got to visit: A Guatemalan bakery.
It was a small bakery but impossible to miss because of the Tikal Pyramid painting on the outside wall. I walked in there and saw a Spanish-only menu. The cashier was a 20-something girl who only spoke Spanish. So I switched my brain into (broken) Spanish mode:
“¿Qué comida Guatemalteca tienes?”
Here is the thing about Spanish: I may be able to ask a question, but understanding the response is a whole different challenge. I didn’t entirely get what she said, but I knew what I was about to get would involve eggs, cheese, and beans – Good enough for me. Trying to order a drink with it:
“y un café grande con leche.”
This I know, I ordered coffee many times before.
“¿Qué comida Guatemalteca tienes?”
“y un café grande con leche.”
